Discover the unique natural and cultural landscape of the Spreewald biosphere reserve in the sunny south of Brandenburg. Countless legends and myths entwine around the widely ramified system of rivers and its inhabitants. Ancient alder forests, light meadows and deserted lakes form the romantic backdrop for an eventful cycling vacation. The historic old town of the green city of Cottbus, the Pückler pyramids, the linseed oil mill in Straupitz, the Paul Gerhardt Church in Lübben and the open-air museum and cucumber museum in Lehde are all worth a visit. On the tour, you can experience a boat trip on the unspoilt rivers as well as huge conveyor bridges during coal mining and one of the largest fish breeding areas in Germany. Excellent cycle paths in unique landscapes promise the perfect cycling experience.
Route
Arrival at the Spree-Waldhotel Cottbus - a very popular bed & bike hotel. A typical Spreewald welcome awaits you. Explore the city of Cottbus with its old market or a masterpiece of garden art, the Branitz Park by Prince Hermann von Pückler.
From Cottbus heading to the Burger Spreewald. The first goal is a charred opencast mine. The "Cottbus Baltic Sea" is being created here. From different viewpoints you have the opportunity to watch the change. The path continues through the Peitzer pond landscape, the largest contiguous pond area in Germany. Numerous rare plant and animal species are native here. The famous Peitzer carp has been bred on site for centuries. On the way to Burg, the local museum in the stork village of Dissen invites you to visit. It houses an interesting exhibition on the life of the Sorbian / Wendish farmers, their customs and festivals, their different costumes and a permanent stork exhibition.
First leg of the day guides you to Straupitz. A special village church with two towers greets you from afar - the Schinkel Church. Here you have the opportunity to take a short tour before going to the last functioning triple mill in Europe. It unites grinding, oil and sawmills under one roof. You can try the linseed oil obtained here yourself. Then continue to Lübben. Here you can discover the Paul-Gerhard-Church, the castle and the castle island. Lübben’s old town invites you to take an individual tour of discovery.
Get to know the less visited Unterspreewald today - a primeval forest-like, almost untouched nature reserve awaits you. Enjoy the tranquility of the Spreewald village Schlepzig. Visit his brewery and taste the beer specialties made there. Then it goes on the main Spree through a kilometer-long lake area back to Lübben.
Today you drive along the main Spree from Lübben via Lübbenau to Lehde. This is where the Spreewald is most pristine. 300 natural watercourses, wide meadows, fields and well-preserved farms determine the picture. The village of Lehde is criss-crossed by a labyrinth of picturesque rivers - the actual streets in the Spreewald. Here you can visit the open air museum and also the cucumber museum. Via the fishing village of Leipe you reach the Slavic Castle in Raddusch. Here you can take a historical-archaeological journey through time to the Slavic past of Lusatia, before returning to Burg.
Get to know the scattered settlement of Burg with its three districts Burg-Dorf, Burg-Kolonie and Burg-Kauper on this beautiful tour. You start on an idyllic two-hour boat trip. Enjoy the tranquility and serenity - that is good for you and makes you want more ... The route takes you back to Cottbus via Werben. Use the evening for a stroll through the Cottbus old town with its many wonderful buildings in Art Nouveau style.
